Al Kent – self confessed Disco obsessive from bonnie Scotland and brains behind Million Dollar Orchestra – jumps on board the FB wagon….
Ewan Kelly aka Al Kent has been at it for a good while, in fact, an awful long time, starting out as a soul boy and discovering his love of disco in the 80’s, a love that turned into an obsession which is still going strong today…
Any visitors to his Million Dollar Disco site can see that music is what drives this man and MDD reflects that with it’s encyclopedic coverage of all things disco.
In today’s current disco loving climate, it’s refreshing to see a DJ with so much history in the field and a passion that goes beyond the latest trends – this tradition has seen him grace some pretty top scenes in recent years:
Al was honoured to be asked by Dave Lee to play at Z Records’ first (and only) party in London, even more honoured to be invited by Dimitri From Paris to play at Respect’s Ete d’Amour afloat on the Seine, and in 2006 was proud to play at Southport Weekender, which kind of took him full circle, playing to the soul crowd he was once part of. And then he was asked back in 2007. In between he’s made regular appearances at London’s Soul City, Edinburgh’s Ultragroove, Bam Bam in Birmingham, Society in Sheffield, Loose Joints in Aberdeen, Powder Room Barcelona, Legacy Berlin, Club Disco in Paris amongst many more, as well as running his own parties from time to time in Glasgow venues such as the Sub Club, Mas, The Buff, and the amazing Big Joint. And now he’s resident DJ at Northern Disco in Manchester, playing alongside some of the world’s best – Kon & Amir, Dimitri, Monk One, Sean P, Rahaan….
With last year’s Million Dollar Orchestra on BBE receiving mega big ups from the dance community, both heads and everyman alike, Al’s continued his production and is set to drop a whole load of new business in the coming months including releases on Kat (most recently the home of Rahaan & Greg Wilson’s re-edits), Disco Cavey of Chicago, a new comp for BBE and reissues on his own Million Dollar Disco label – Mr Kent’s a busy man.
